Raj Kumar (Rajendra Kumar )an ambitious young man dreams of a life of prosperity. He takes a job and his hard work pays off and he is able to earn the trust of his boss and get promoted to a good post. On a vacation with his friend Lachchu (O. P. Ralhan), he falls in love with a village girl Gauri (Sharmila Tagore) and promises her father (D.K. Sapru) that he will return in a month's time to marry her.
But things don’t turn out the way he planned. When he returns to the city he finds his boss wants himto marry his daughter or lose his job. Raj, is at the crossroads when he has to choose between Gauri, a village girl, and Madhu, a beautiful young lady, who is the daughter of his boss.
